Certified Reclaimed HFC Refrigerants

The American Carbon Registry (ACR), a nonprofit enterprise of Winrock International, has announced an open public comment period for version 2.0 of its approved Methodology for the Quantification, Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions from the Use of Certified Reclaimed HFC Refrigerants.

In the methodology, greenhouse emission reductions and removals are quantified from the use of reclaimed HFC refrigerant in lieu of virgin HFC. This update adds the emissions at end of life (EOL) of the equipment containing the HFCs and updates emissions rates consistent with the EPA GHG Inventory 1990-2019. A detailed list of methodology updates can be found below in the “Summary of Proposed Modifications for HFC Reclaim v2.0”.

The methodology update was developed by ACR over the last year based on the most recent data for end-use specific HFC emission rates from the U.S. EPA. The methodology is being updated through ACR’s public consultation and scientific peer review processes.
