Afforestation and Reforestation of Degraded Lands

The American Carbon Registry (ACR), a non-profit enterprise of Winrock International, has approved a Methodology for Afforestation and Reforestation of Degraded Lands v1.1. This methodology is applicable to projects conducting afforestation and reforestation (A/R) on lands that are expected to remain degraded or continue to degrade in the absence of the project.

The ACR methodology v 1.0 was initially developed from Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) approved consolidated afforestation and reforestation baseline and monitoring methodology AR-ACM0001 Version 5.0.0. Guidance on accounting for harvested wood products, drawn from a methodology for Improved Forest Management through Extension of Rotation Age developed by Winrock International, was incorporated by TREES Forest Carbon Consulting, reviewed and approved by ACR’s independent Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) Technical Committee and published in March 2011. Version 1.1, approved in August 2013, is the result of a second modification by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), which adds the USFS Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) as an approved tool to estimate carbon stock changes in A/R projects.

Projects registered on ACR (before August 2013) under v1.0 of the methodology are not required to use v1.1 until beginning a new crediting period, however, they may elect to do so sooner.
